Mr. Book just finished A Is For Atheist: An A To Z Of The Godless Life, by Andrew Sneddon.

The author is a college philosophy professor. I was initially enthusiastic about this book, but then realized that was because I glanced too quickly at the author’s name and thought it was a book by the excellent atheist author and attorney Andrew Seidel. I admit that I still would have made the mistake of buying the book even if I got the author right, but I wouldn’t have been as enthusiastic about reading this one.

This extremely unsuccessful book is in the format of a dictionary in which the author either attempts to define a word, a phrase or even asks a question. The entries each fall into one of the following categories: (1) the author speaks down to the audience, writing as though the audience has never heard of atheists before, (2) the author goes into professor mode, in which he gives what could be an excerpt from a terrible college philosophy class that every student hates every lecture or (3) just plain old boring entries. If there even a single good entry in the book, I don’t remember it It would be drowned out by the monotony of the worthless ones.

I give this book an F. Goodreads requires grades on a 1-5 star system. In my personal conversion system, an F equates to 1 star. (A or A+: 5 stars, B+: 4 stars, B: 3 stars, C: 2 stars, D or F: 1 star).
